Former Japanese lawmaker Jun Matsumoto, who served as chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, has died at the age of 75 after battling stomach cancer.
Matsumoto was a member of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party and served in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the National Diet of Japan, for seven terms after first being elected in 1996 from a constituency in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Born in Yokohama, Matsumoto began his political career on the Yokohama City Council before rising to national prominence. He was known as a close ally of former Prime Minister Taro Aso and played a key role within Aso’s political faction.
During his career, Matsumoto served as deputy chief cabinet secretary in the Aso administration and was later appointed chairman of the National Public Safety Commission in 2016 under then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
He remained a loyal member of Aso’s faction, which evolved into the Shikokai group, throughout his time in politics.
Matsumoto is being remembered for his long service in government and his contributions to Japan’s political landscape.
