A driver was arrested following a crash in Clay County after authorities say he was found to have an extremely high blood alcohol content.
According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Monday to reports of an overturned box truck on a rural road in Platte Township, just north of Smithville Lake. When they arrived, they discovered the truck overturned with beer bottles scattered around the scene, but no driver present.
Witnesses later told deputies they saw a man walking away from the crash carrying additional beer bottles. The individual was eventually located and identified as the driver of the truck.
Authorities said the man appeared highly intoxicated and was found to have a restricted license due to prior DWI convictions, which required him to use an ignition interlock device while driving.
Nearly two hours after the crash, the driver’s blood alcohol content was measured at .307%—almost four times the legal limit of .08%.
The man was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being transported to the Clay County Detention Center, where he is awaiting formal charges from prosecutors.
Officials emphasized the dangers of impaired driving, noting it was fortunate no one was injured in the incident.
