A fatal collision between a regional train and a car occurred Thursday afternoon in Nomain, leaving one person dead.
The accident happened shortly after 4 p.m. on the Lille–Valenciennes rail line at a level crossing on Rue du Chapitre, near Orchies. Emergency responders, including firefighters, were quickly dispatched to the scene.
According to initial reports, the vehicle became lodged beneath the front of a regional express train (TER), requiring specialized lifting and extrication equipment to remove it.
Authorities say the victim, believed to be the driver of the car, was a 53-year-old man from Auchy-lez-Orchies. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A dog that was in the vehicle also reportedly died in the crash.
Preliminary findings suggest the driver may have crossed the tracks while the crossing barriers were already down. The incident led to a suspension of train services in both directions along the line as investigations and recovery efforts continue.
